TF2mate: advanced scoreboard view
One of TF2mate’s potential strengths is implementing all kinds of small tweaks by default that you might forget to install when making your configs manually. An example is the advanced scoreboard view. I’ve stolen this idea from flame’s competitive configs. Instead of using the default +showscores command, we implement a custom +mate_scores command that also toggles net_graph...

tf2mate - TF2 config generator →
I coded this little thing today. It’s not even nearly finished, but I want to release it so that I’ll have some motivation to develop it. Any feedback, bug reports and feature suggestions appreciated very much.

Tip: coping with bad routing
This tip comes from Jarppa. Good job on discovering this! Sometimes there’s no option but to play on a server that has bad routing for you. In these cases it helps a bit to tweak your network configurations, but it’s not very easy to remember optimum settings for different types of servers and type them manually in the console each time. I haven’t decided whether this approach...

Tip: remember your server passwords
You might be using the “remember password” options found in most internet browsers. Unfortunately, the TF2 server browser is missing this feature for your favorite servers. You can remember passwords with aliases by putting this in your autoexec.cfg: alias myclanserv "connect 123.124.125.126:27015;password mypass" Now the console command “myclanserv” will go to your clan...

Opas: viritä Team Fortress 2 kilpakuntoon
This is a guide for tweaking your configs and HUD, written in Finnish. Don’t be alarmed, I’ll be posting mostly in English in the future too ;) Tässä on opas, jolla saat TF2:n kuntoon kilpapelaamista (6v6) varten. Jokaisella on toki oma tapansa virittää pelinsä, mutta tällä sivulla esittelen oman tapani jolla mielestäni saa TF2:sta puristettua kaikki mehut irti. Sisällysluettelo ...

Where's my wallhack!?!?
As some of you may know, Chris’ TF2 configs provide a significantly better performance than m0re’s old configs that everyone used at one point. The only gripe for me is that Chris has decided to remove player model shadows in maxframes and highframes. This is not good, because shadows are a gameplay element. Team Fortress 2 has a buggy way of displaying shadows, which makes it...

We lost our maps 2-0, 1-5 on cp_coldfront and 3-5 on cp_badlands. The better team won, but Illegal didn’t win without a good fight. A great game. I’ll upload the STV demos later. Thanks :]

The power of curiosity
A quick story from Assembly Winter 2010. We were watching a match, TCM vs. Dignitas. TCM had just started having massive upwards momentum online, but Dignitas was still in everyone’s hearts, especially because the team holds three Finnish players, Darn as their charismatic leader. 90% of the spectators had their eyes glued to the screens of Dignitas. Now delays on LAN game schedules are...

communitytf2hud font fix
On my last rant I talked about how the default TF2 typefaces - used even in custom HUDs - are a bad choice for a competitive player. Apparently fixing this was a bit easier than I thought. Thanks for the people who commented on this! So, here’s a font fix for the excellent communitytf2hud. The fix is for the latest version, but probably won’t go broken for a while. If you find any...

Back, stronger than ever
After a break of exactly 100 days since my last official game, I played a match against the div2 team Xeo FreneZy in ETF2L’s AFS Summer league with my current team, Crack Clan. I joined this team as a Soldier a little over a month ago and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. Everyone’s been really nice and focused on improving their game. This is easily the strongest team...

Why m0rehud is (still) the best HUD out there
edit: Actually, nowadays the best hud is of course community hud with my font fix ;) Also, there’s broeselhud, which is a continuation project to m0rehud with fixes and updates. I recently changed from m0rehud to the communitytf2hud. The reason was that m0rehud isn’t updated anymore, and its age is showing already. For example, it doesn’t have the new feature of having the...

Why spamming is important
Lesson to be learned: never underestimate the importance of spamming from far away. It might just turn your push from a painful slowpush into an easy rollover… Even if you don’t hit your rockets after that ;)

Hooked
I guess that I’m more addicted to the game than I thought ;) A few IRC conversations convinced me to look for a backup spot instead of giving up TF2 completely. I have some ideas for future posts as well, so it’s not looking too bad for this blog either.

So I’ve decided quit TF2. cBullets was a fantastic clan for me, but unfortunately I don’t have enough time to practice as much as I’d like to. Means that I probably won’t post much here either after this ;l I don’t mean to be very final about my departure, but after spending hundreds and hundreds of hours in-game, this might be a good place to thank the people who...

In case you’ve made awesome frags or you have other cool demos you want to share with the TF2 community, I advise you to send your demos to Cla. I’ve also sent some clips of...

Interview with an ex-cheater
It’s funny how Payard seems much more mature than most of the people posting in the Anti-Cheat improvements thread in ETF2L. Just proves how overhyped the whole problem with cheaters is.

The troopers are down!
My clan, Catching Bullets, just received its first victory in ETF2L’s Season 7 against the Finnish clan Virtual Troopers. We went to this match being very confident in our teamwork. I must say I was a bit nervous playing against their lineup. Both dajackal and xzar have been housed in a div1 team, and eetu a.k.a. indey is also known to be a devastating Scout on his best days. I didn’t...

Guide: Learn the middle jumps
In my previous post, I linked some YouTube videos with instructions on how the Granary and Badlands rollouts work. The videos show you how the jumps should go in a game, but what they don’t show is how to learn them. Learning the jumps is all about repetition. Let’s say it takes you 100 repetitions to learn the jumps correctly and then another 200 repetitions to mastering them well...

Three Finnish teams to watch in ETF2L Season 7
Power Gaming (Div1) After seeing their ESL V Major Series Finals match against TCM yesterday, you can’t deny how surprising this team can be again and again. This time they were actually considered the underdogs: PwR had done awfully on cp_well before, and the maps were going to be cp_gravelpit, cp_well and as a decider… cp_well again. After seeing PwR lose horribly on...

cBullets vs. CZetaX
I just finished playing my first official ETF2L game as a demoman, and even though we lost 4-1 against CZetaX, I must say I enjoyed every second of it. The first map, cp_badlands was a 3-3 tie. We had a decent all-around game but the timer cut us 30 second short from a win on the map. You could blame bad luck, but we also wasted a lot of time in the map with unsuccessful pushes and stalling the...

My task list
1. Play with the team, as a team. 2. Learn the middle jumps. 3. Play #gather.fi pickups (not useful) as a Demoman, then move to #mpuktf2.pickup2 and perhaps #thematsi. Also a lot of mixes when no PCWs available. 4. Watch demos of other demos. 5. Get a mentor Scrap that, it’s too hard to get one :’( 6. Grenade Launcher aiming practice (TF2DM). 7. And most importantly, BE HUMBLE...

Becoming the middleman
Division 3 in ETF2L isn’t exactly child’s play. Things that are tricky for a beginner can be a no-brainer to the standard div3 Demo. One such area is getting to the middle as fast as you can. I never really had to concentrate my attention to middle jumps as a Soldier. Mainly because most of the jumps are a lot easier, but also because I failed to see value of fine-tuning the speed of...

Get 'em, boyos!
Hey, I’m a Finnish TF2 player, known as compton in the scene. My main class has been Soldier all my TF2 career. I’ve had fungames, pickups and experiments with other classes too, but Soldier is the only class I’ve played seriously. I’ve been looking for the right team as a Soldier for over two months now. Being a Soldier, a lot of the gameplay depends on your team...
